We at Overlook envision our patients as informed partners in their own care. To facilitate that vision, we will provide a network-enabled computer monitor at every bedside. Already tested on the ninth floor, the touch-screen stations offer a special medical module with facts on the patient's condition and possible treatment. Caregivers will point patients to files for education or instructions for recovery at home while patients are still hospitalized. Doctors will eventually enter their orders at the bedside and, together with patients, view test results and images. The screens will give each patient full Internet and e_mail access; on-demand television, music, games, and movies; and menu choices for their own and guest meals. Studies of the system indicate tha tthe computers improve pain management, reduce repetitive nursing duties, and speed healing.
