Patient Privacy, Comfort, and Access Initiative

$35 million

To improve every patient's ability to heal, Overlook Hospital will create the hospital room of the 21st century. No longer will doctor-patient discussions be public experiences. No longer will a roommate's visitors interrupt rest. Findings from recent studies indicate that patients fare better in private rooms with family nearby, so Overlook will convert most of its patient rooms so they house one bed and furniture to make family comfortable, often for overnight stays. New, high-tech beds will tilt to assist in rising, adjust pressure points to prevent bed sores, adapt firmness for specific medical procedures, and reduce injuries to staff while lifting patients. The rooms will be available to everyone who requires no advanced monitoring and will allow caregivers to deliver some new treatments at bedside in complete privacy. The Next Century of Healing Campaign will help build two new patient floors, refurbish two others, equip those rooms of the future, and establish a new standard of care for the nation's hospitals.

In addition, Overlook Hospital will reorganize inpatient surgery, same-day surgery, and vascular and cardiac interventional services in one area for faster patient access and coordinated post-surgicl care as the hospital seeks to become a center of excellence in minimally invasive procedures. Outpatient pediatrics will be expanded and placed in new suites close to visitor acess and parking, and all ambulatory services will employ streamlined registration for rapid entry to care.
